I’m a huge fan of both Brian Duffield and Kaitlyn Dever, each of whom is a unique presence in the industry. The former is a wildly creative storyteller, while the latter is one of the most underrated actresses in Hollywood. So, when they collaborated on No One Will Save You, I was very excited. I’d previously spoken to Duffield here about his wonderful film Spontaneous. When we met on Zoom this time to talk No One Will Save You, we quickly turned our attention to Dever.
In my review of No One Will Save You (here), I had this to say about Duffield’s work:
Filmmaker Brian Duffield, as mentioned above, blew me away with Spontaneous (as you can see here), and while this is more serious a work, it’s no less impressive. Duffield manages to up the ante and ratchet up the tension for almost the entirety of the 90 minute runtime. Not only is there a lot of clever filmmaking on display, as well as confident direction, his writing peppers in some real emotion. It’s primarily a genre piece, but when there’s drama, it really hits. Much of that is due to Kaitlyn Dever, but Duffield showcases here that he’s not just a talented writer, but a director of some note as well.
Below, you can see my chat with Duffield. We make this a big love fest about Dever, as you might imagine, but we also talk a lot about what he finds interesting as a filmmaker. That applies to No One Will Save You, of course, but also cinema on the whole. He and I are having a good time, while actually having a real conversation. If you haven’t seen his movie, it’s on Disney+ and an absolute blast. If you have, it’s highly re-watchable, both for Dever and for Duffield’s captivated craftsmanship.
