Ted McGinley has had several acts to his career. Whether it’s early on when his presence on sitcoms sometimes foretold their end, to his iconic turn in Married with Children, McGinley always brought the goods, whether or not the shows kept up with him. With Shrinking, he’s not only found his best role to date, he’s being challenged as well. When we sat down a few weeks ago to chat, mainly about Shrinking, the subject came up, leading to an excellent discussion. Today, that fun little talk comes your way. Previously, I spoke about the show with star Jason Segel (here) and creator Bill Lawrence (here). Now, it’s McGinley’s turn!

Below, you can see my conversation with McGinley. Having grown up with his work, especially on Married with Children, it was really enjoyable to just be chatting with the man. We were riffing on telemarketing scams before we even started recording, before diving right into Shrinking and playing Derek as the man gets to evolve in the world of the show. He’s incredibly thoughtful and fun to talk with, especially given what this role is doing not just for his career, but for him as an artist. It was a lovely chat. The show is wonderful as well, and really is only getting better, not simply for him and his character, but overall, too. It’s streaming on Apple TV+ right now, so check it out if you somehow have not yet. You can thank me later…

Here now is my interview with Shrinking co-star Ted McGinley. Enjoy:

Today, NEON released a video showcasing filmmaker Sean Baker‘s three decade journey to his Academy Award nominated Anora. The movie is up for six Oscars, including Best Picture, as well as Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Baker himself. You can see Baker in conversation with our own Joey Magidson here, as well as Joey’s rave review of the film here.

The press release says the following:

SEAN BAKER’S 30-YEAR CAREER IS A TESTAMENT TO HIS COMMITMENT TO INDEPENDENT CINEMA AND HIS ABILITY TO HUMANIZE THE OVERLOOKED CORNERS OF AMERICAN LIFE. HE BEGAN HIS FEATURE FILM CAREER WITH TAKE OUT (2004), A RAW, VÉRITÉ-STYLE DRAMA ABOUT AN UNDOCUMENTED CHINESE IMMIGRANT NAVIGATING A GRUELING DAY AS A DELIVERY WORKER. THE FILM SET THE TONE FOR BAKER’S FUTURE WORK-INTIMATE, CHARACTER-DRIVEN STORIES.

WITH PRINCE OF BROADWAY (2008) AND STARLET (2012), BAKER CONTINUED TO HONE HIS NATURALISTIC STYLE, OFTEN WORKING WITH NON-PROFESSIONAL ACTORS TO BRING AUTHENTICITY TO HIS STORIES. HE FOLLOWED WITH TANGERINE (2015), A GROUNDBREAKING FILM SHOT ENTIRELY ON AN IPHONE THAT PUT BAKER ON THE MAP.

THE FLORIDA PROJECT (2017) EARNED HIM WIDESPREAD CRITICAL ACCLAIM. THROUGH THE LENS OF A SIX-YEAR-OLD GIRL LIVING IN A MOTEL NEAR DISNEY WORLD, BAKER CAPTURED THE JOY AND STRUGGLE OF AMERICA’S HIDDEN HOMELESS. RED ROCKET (2021) CONTINUED HIS EXPLORATION OF AMERICAN SUBCULTURES, THIS TIME FOLLOWING A WASHED-UP ADULT FILM STAR
RETURNING TO HIS TEXAS HOMETOWN.

ALL OF THIS LED TO ANORA (2024), BAKER’S MOST AMBITIOUS WORK YET. CHRONICLING THE WHIRLWIND ROMANCE BETWEEN A BROOKLYN SEX WORKER AND THE SON OF A RUSSIAN OLIGARCH, THE FILM EARNED BAKER THE PALME D’OR-SOLIDIFYING HIS PLACE AS ONE OF THE MOST VITAL FILMMAKERS OF HIS GENERATION. HIS JOURNEY FROM MICRO-BUDGET GUERRILLA FILMMAKING TO THE TOP OF THE CINEMATIC WORLD IS A TRIUMPH OF VISION, PERSISTENCE, AND AN UNWAVERING DEDICATION TO TELLING THE STORIES OF THOSE OFTEN LEFT IN THE MARGINS.

Here is the video, chronicling Baker’s journey to Anora. Enjoy:

I’m shocked that it wasn’t a bigger deal that Palm Royale featured Laura Dern sharing the screen with her father Bruce Dern for the first time. After all, he’s a legend, while she is one of the more beloved actresses in the business today. So, when I had the opportunity to chat again with her, alongside her producing partner Jayme Lemons, it was a wonderful chance to not just celebrate her dad more, but to give this collaboration its flowers. I had another epic conversation here with the senior Dern, but today, it’s his daughter, alongside Lemons, having a chat about Palm Royale.

Below, you can see my conversation with Dern and Lemons. This is a Bruce Dern love-fest, as you might imagine, but I also make sure to point out the accomplishments of both of these talented women. Getting Palm Royale to the screen is an accomplishment, so even getting to the point of the father and daughter sharing the same space in their art is almost a miracle. Both of them are lovely, we have a lot of fun, and there’s time for this discussion to go off in so many directions. One thing that you’ll see but probably already knew is that Laura loves Bruce. Hell, we all do. So, there’s a lot of love on this Zoom, as you’ll see momentarily.

I absolutely adore talking to Mark Duplass. He’s not only charming and funny, he’s real, and that’s a commodity that’s gold in this business. A longtime stable of independent cinema, Duplass is not just a talented filmmaker, he’s an accomplished actor in his own right. Currently, he’s having a moment on The Morning Show, where his character Chip gets a powerful monologue to close out season four. I’d previously spoken to him here for Language Lessons, as well as moderated a pair of Q&A events with him and Natalie Morales that year, so I knew going in this would be a pleasure. Today, you can experience that same thing.

Below, you can see my latest chat with Duplass. We talk about why The Morning Show was the right opportunity for him, the difference between these big projects and the little ones he made his bones on, and much more. Plus, we double back to discuss Biosphere a bit (raved about by yours truly here), since we’d been scheduled to speak right before the strike. You’ll hear him talk about how he feels like he’s winning the arrangement between Apple and himself, as well as plenty of fun little anecdotes. He’s such a great guy, I could go back and forth with him for hours. Hopefully you enjoy this half as much as I did.

Here now is my interview with The Morning Show co-star and all around indie film renaissance man Mark Duplass. Enjoy:

One of the most consistently mind-blowing shows on television, one that pushes the medium forward, is an animated series that has grown to heights the creators never could have anticipated. That show is Rick and Morty, easily the most ambitious animated series out there. One of the writers on the show, Heather Anne Campbell, has leant her specific point of view to some incredible episodes. You may have previously seen her as a performer on Whose Line Is It Anyway?, or heard her in the podcasting world, but her writing on Rick and Morty is incredible, especially here in Season Seven (as is her voice performance in the prior season). Earlier this week, she was kind of to take a bit of time out from her travels in Japan to talk about her work. Today, you can hear that chat!

Campbell’s episodes of Rick and Morty this past season were the fourth episode, That’s Amorte, and the tenth episode (which is the season finale), Fear No Mort. Her episodes have always been some of the most engaging and interesting, let alone entertaining and thought-provoking, with these two being no exceptions. They leave a mark on you, as all good art should.

In addition to writing on Rick and Morty, she’s also the co-host of one of the best podcasts out there, Get Played. Once known as How Did This Get Played?, it’s a video game podcast, one that used to focus almost exclusively on bad games, but now is more just about gaming in general. You’ve almost certainly heard me reference it on our own Awards Radar Podcast, so that should tell you something about how fond of it I am. It’s accessible yet distinctive, like sitting in on a conversation with friends.

Below, you can hear my conversation with Campbell. We bounce back and forth between the podcast and the show, but it speaks to the breadth of her talents that I kept thinking of both. Her answers are clever, thoughtful, and wholly befitting an artist who sees the world in a very singular manner. We laugh a lot, too, which is always a treat. She’s awesome and this was a blast, which I think is reflected in the discussion. We talk about a ton, even down to our pets! Don’t miss her work on Rick and Morty, which represents some of the most memorable television writing this season.

Here now is my interview with Rick and Morty writer Heather Anne Campbell. Enjoy:

Please note OUR EMMY PREDICTIONS ARE LIVE (links can be found at the end of the article). After reading this FYC piece (and the related Comedy FYC) head over to my Emmy predictions across twenty categories.

Over the past four months the incredible Awards Radar TV team has been endlessly working to provide an FYC of sorts through hundreds of interviews with the contenders both above and below the line. (You can find them all under the TV / FYC menu above.) Our goal is to cast a spotlight on the performances and the talented work not only of the Emmy frontrunners, but some who may not be on your radar.

We know that many of your Emmy decisions are not often made until the last few hours of the Emmy phase one voting. For this reason, in addition to our endless interviews, we have provided this list of names for Emmy voters to keep in mind as you fill out those ballots. Keep it handy as you make your choices, because every name listed truly delivered this season. And, if you have not watched their work yet, NOW is your time.

We are not asking you to forget your personal favorites or to cast aside those worthy nominees currently favored to win. What we do want you to do is instead of voting with the flow make some waves by casting votes for some very deserving nominees when possible. We love all the big shows, we love the favorites, but the TV landscape is vast and better representation of shows big and small is needed.

If you look at the list of potential nominees who will be left off the official final Emmy nominations you will find several if not dozens of worthy nominees. Let’s recognize them. And away we go.

OUR AWARDS RADAR DRAMA FYC

THE RULES: Our Awards Radar TV’s Emmys FYC contains names of the outstanding newcomers and already established work that has yet to find a place on the Emmy ballot that our ARTV team knows deserve your attention. Some of these names are brand new while others are head scratching omissions from seasons’ worth of incredible comedic work.

DRAMA SERIES

Now that Succession is out of the way, we can expect plenty of new nominees, especially in the acting categories. It is also an opportunity to add so previously unrecognized series to the Drama Series category. If you’re going to do so consider voting for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the sci-fi series that boldly took us where no Star Trek has gone before… a musical episode. For All Mankind & Silo both gave us more solid sci-fi adventures one set 20 years in the past, the other the future – both riveting. Mr. and Mrs. Smith took a film many loved and made us forget all about it with a series that felt completely fresh with its look at the most unconventional of marriages.

If you want to vote for something out there, just not in the space sense there’s The Curse which was one of the most unique series to premiere this year or any. Like it Elsbeth blended comedy and drama leaning heaving on the charm of its lead. Let me clarify, while Shōgun is clearly one of my favorite series of the year it is also a lock for a nomination, which is why I decided to give the spotlight pick to a different series. That goes too…

Our Spotlight Pick: Slow Horses which seems to only get better with time. Each season the relationships between the members of Slough House become a little more interesting, and the characters quirkier and more endearing – who can’t root for the underdogs? Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb is a gas.

Runner-Up: I hadn’t played the video game before watching Fallout, but after just two episodes I had to because of the amount of creativity on display – a fun mix of dark humor, drama, gore and more.

Lead Actor in a DRAMA Series

The category had been dominated in the past by one series, but this year it has a lot of room for new blood. Starting with some old blood Gary Oldman (Slow Horses) in one of my favorite performances of his career. Another actor with long career that is finally in position for some deserved Emmy love the Hiroyuki Sanada (Shōgun). Donald Glover switched over from comedy to drama with style in Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

More names to keep on your radar, Nathan Fielder (The Curse), Idris Elba (Hijack), and Morgan Spector (The Gilded Aged).

Our Spotlight Pick: The first chapter of Shōgun introduces us to Blackthorne Cosmo Jarvis, a character that instantly demands your attention and willingly had me excited to see where he would take us next. He is an adventurer, a lover, a strategist, has quite the sense of humor and an ego to match. One of the most enjoyable characters to watch this year with plenty of depth under the surface.

Runner-up: Walton Goggins (Fallout) gives two very different performances playing two versions of the same character – one when he had a life and one after he lost it all. Two sides of the same coin that both land with a punch.

Lead Actress in a DRAMA Series

This category offers such a wide range of performances all offering something different – they are hard to compare, so don’t – just cast your vote for those you find work like: Carrie Coon always provides a master class in acting and does so again in The Gilded Age. Emma Stone follows up her wild winning performance with one deserving Emmy consideration, at the very least. Ella Purnell and Rebecca Ferguson both fill their dystopian landscapes with strong characters to keep an eye on as they face their own private battles. Carrie Preston is delightful in Elsbeth, enough so for you to throw her your vote, that is a mystery she’d like to solve.

Our Spotlight Pick: What Maya Erskine did for the teen years with PEN15 was incredible. To follow that up with Mr. and Mrs. Smith where she’s gunslinging and punch throwing while dealing with all the the challenges of marriage makes both performances more impressive – who knew she had it in her? And now that we do I want to see much more of what she has to offer.

Runner-Up: Again I am going to push an FYC to the the runner-up spot, because she seems like a lock. This does not mean you should ignore her on your ballot – anything but. Anna Sawai (Shōgun) gives a complex and nuance performance – one that leaves an impact on the screen and viewers. Vote away.

Supporting Actor in a DRAMA Series

Without Succession this becomes a much quieter category leaving my FYC picks to a limited number, Khalid Abdalla and Jonathan Pryce in The Crown come up strong (though I really do like Pryce’s work in Slow Horses just as much). Benny Safdie rounds out the trio of oddity on The Curse. And
Benedict Wong proves that you can cast him in anything and he’s going to deliver. Ke Huy Quan (Loki) was a very welcome addition to the second season – his comic stylings are a joy to watch making him ever so likable.

Our Spotlight Pick: How in the world do we like the deceitful, brutal Yabushige in Shōgun, because Tadanobu Asano makes him a complete charmer, even when boiling people to death, stabbing backs or looking out for number one. Asano’s performance made him another must watch character – one that may not share the same ethics, but who I couldn’t say no to sharing a beer (or sake) with.

Runner-Up: I have fallen for Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) as River Cartwright. Flawed characters in search of redemption are kind of my thing and no one is doing it better than Lowden.

Supporting Actress in a DRAMA Series

Take away The White Lotus and Succession and this category offers plenty of room for new blood to choose from. Coincidentally, they seem to come in pairs – some names to keep in mind include Kristin Scott Thomas and Saskia Reeves (Slow Horses), Celia Rose Gooding and Christina Chong (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds), Moeka Hoshi and Fumi Nikaido (Shogun). All bring something unique to their roles that span space, time and genres.

Our Spotlight Pick: Maybe I am still stuck on Past Lives, but Greta Lee work this season really worked for me. The restaurant scene alone was enough to make her a standout this season doing much more with much less than some of the leads (if I do say so myself).

Runner-up: Every season someone steps up on The Crown – this season it was Lesley Manville whose work as Princess Margaret has her dealing with loss of health issues of her own yet still being the rebelious princess she was known to be.

Thank you For Your Consideration. We look forward to seeing who makes that final list on July 12th – hopefully a few surprises. Look for more Emmy coverage and interviews on Awards Radar from our incredible team; Joey Magidson, Abe Friedtanzer, Niki Cruz, Ayla Ruby, Danny Jarabek, Maxance Vincent, Diego Peralta, Lucas Longacre, Emilia Yu, Norm Felker, Cory Stillman, Joshua Harris, Red Broadwell – along with me, TV Editor Steven Prusakowski, have been working endlessly to ensure all the best of television is on your Awards Radar.

Please note OUR EMMY PREDICTIONS ARE LIVE (here). Before or after reading this FYC piece (and the related Drama FYC) head over to the current Emmy predictions across twenty categories.

If you look at the list of potential nominees who will be left off the official final Emmy nominations you will find several if not dozens of worthy nominees. Let’s recognize them. And away we go.

OUR AWARDS RADAR COMEDY FYC

THE RULES: Our Awards Radar TV’s Emmy FYC contains names of the outstanding newcomers and already established work that has yet to find a place on the Emmy ballot that our ARTV team knows deserve your attention. Some of these names are brand new while others are head scratching omissions from seasons’ worth of incredible comedic work.

COMEDY SERIES
The first thing to notice are the missing names that have been represented in this category for the last handful of year. Shows like Barry, Ted Lasso, Atlanta, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel have all said their goodbyes leaving room for a new Emmy contenders. Still yet to make the nominations list are series like Ghosts, Girls5eva, and Physical.

Then there’s the cancelled but surely not forgotten Our Flag Means Death, which if you don’t know has some of the most dedicated fans – they conducted endless campaigns to help the series renewed or find a new home. They even rented spaced on a billboard in Times Square. Sadly to no avail. The series had a wonderful final season and deserves some recognition.

New series’ like The Boys spinoff, Gen V, which had no business being as good as it was especially when watching so many bad people, I’m a Virgo, and the star-studded Palm Royale certainly make a case for your vote.

Our Spotlight Pick: Reservation Dogs (FX) The series about about four Native teenagers in making their way in Oklahoma while dealing with the suicide of their fifth continued to evolve, added emotional depth, and found ways to surprise, make us laugh and cry. It has been a spiritual journey that only got better right to the very end.

Runner Up: Colin From Accounts – the surprise comedy series of the year for me, a tender, irreverent, unconventional romance that keeps you locked in thanks to the leads chemistry. Give it a watch.

Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Two names that should be on your minds when voting are the reliably hilarious Utkarsh Ambudkar (Ghosts) and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs) whose emotional journey was one to watch this season. Again some of the funniest men on television have been ignored. Fix that with a vote for Alan Tudyk (Resident Alien) or Kayvan Novak and Matt Berry for What We Do In The Shadows

Newcomers this year Theo James (The Gentlemen) and Jharrel Jerome (I Am Virgo) left big impressions for very different reasons.

Our Spotlight Pick: This season of Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet on Our Flag Means Death delivered one of the best, most nuanced and still incredibly funny performances of his career as they wrapped his love story with Taika Waititi‘s Blackbeard (another actor to consider) in the most beautiful fashion.

Runner up: Patrick Brammall (Colin From Accounts) is endlessly relatable, funny, and a joy to watch as he bumbles through life, relationships, and pet care.

Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

This category has some familiar faces who we can expect to get some nods, Ayo Edebiri, Jean Smart, and Quinta Brunson seem like locks, but there’s still room for some fresh names like Renee Elise Goldsberry (Girls5Eva) and Kristen Wiig (Palm Royale), while not new to the scene both are ready for their first nomination in the category. Call them snubs or omissions, whatever you want, consider your vote to make these actresses first-time nominees. Somehow Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building) and Rose McIver (Ghosts) Rose Byrne (Physical) have all gone without nominations for their work. Add to that list Natasia Demetriou on the criminally under-Emmy-appreciated (What We Do in the Shadows) which received its only Emmy win for costumes.

Our Spotlight Pick: We demand you to consider Devery Jacobs (Reservation Dogs) whose work has been amazing from episode one of the series, but her work in the penultimate episode of the season which had her meeting her father for the first time was mesmerizing, sweet, and tapped right into my heart. While her work on the series is certainly not defined by that episode alone, she saved the best the last with one of the best episodes of TV this year.

Runner up: Harriet Dyer (Colin From Accounts) If you know Harriet’s work on American Auto this is completely different, but just as good. Charming and sweet with lots of rough edges.

Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

The Bear will have plenty of Emmy representation but it doesn’t mean that a few of these actors and actresses don’t deserved your consideration. Oliver Platt & Matty Matheson both gave stellar performances making the most of their screen time with a surprising amount of depth. Please keep in mind the Paul Walter Hauser (The Afterparty) as a private dick without a clue nor the craftiness, but what he lacks there he makes up in laughs – worthy of his own series, imo. J.B. Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm) makes too damn funny look too damn easy – it’s not. Remember that and consider him for this final season – the house guest that never left makes every line an opportunity for hilarity.

What We Do in the Shadows comes up again and again but because Emmy voters have yet to acknowledge Mark Proksch he’s back here again. The only thing more draining than his character’s powers is the idea that comic work this strong has not recognized garnered one Emmy acting nomination. Paul W. Downs has been nominated for his writing on Hacks, but he is much more than a writer his work on screen is consistently great – funny, smart, and tapped into the pulse of the character.

Our Spotlight Pick: What Harvey Guillén (What We Do In the Shadows) can do with a raised eyebrow or a quick glance at the camera is incredible, add to the that all he brings to Guillermo’s journey that took some unexpected turns just when you thought his dreams were coming true lead to a hilarious and heartfelt arc I did’t anticipate.

Runner-up: Lionel Boyce (The Bear) in season one Marcus was part of the amazing ensemble, but for season two he spread his wings and flew. We were allowed inside his life, his head and his heart.

Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

How is Meryl Streep (Only Murders In the Building), one of the most respected actresses of all time on this list? Rules are rules. She was never nominated in the category – plus she delivered a comedic performance where she more than held her own among some of comedy’s best.

Another The Bear performance that still needs to be recognized is Liza Colon-Zayas‘ – her work as Tina is just another wonderfully layered performance in a series full of them. Isn’t it time to look out for some new blood? If so, Allison Janney and Carol Burnett are definitely worth considering.

There’s also Paulina Alexis in Reservation Dogs who doesn’t always say a ton, but has just the right words to make an impact. Alexis has an authenticity about her that makes everything, from the humor to the drama, land with conviction. And then there’s Paula Pell (Girls5Eva) the unsung hero of the series who is worthy of your consideration.

Our Spotlight Pick: Abby Elliott (The Bear) keeps surprising me. In season one she got my attention. In season two she demanded it. While many other actors on the praised series are given their recognition, Elliott’s work is the glue that binds much of this show together and should not be left off ballots. While her work in “Fishes” was a quiet standout, her presence can be felt in every scene she is in this season – no matter who she is sharing the screen with.

Runner-up: Susie Essman (Curb Your Enthusiasm) is much more than swearing and screaming, she’s the series moral compass and after 24 years in the role maybe follow that compass to her name on the ballot. Someone should really put up a billboard of her to promote her work this season. What’s the worst that can happen?

Thank you For Your Consideration. We look forward to seeing who makes that final list on July 12th – hopefully a few surprises. Look for more Emmy coverage and interviews on Awards Radar from our incredible team; Joey Magidson, Abe Friedtanzer, Niki Cruz, Ayla Ruby, Danny Jarabek, Maxance Vincent, Diego Peralta, Lucas Longacre, Emilia Yu, Norm Felker, Cory Stillman, Joshua Harris and Red Broadwell, – along with me, TV Editor Steven Prusakowski, have been working endlessly to ensure all the best of television is on your Awards Radar.

Molly Gordon finally got me to watch The Bear. Now, I’d wanted to check out the show for some time now, but it’s no secret that I’m bad about television. However, Emmy season can be a real help there, as the opportunity to speak with Gordon was the kick in the pants I needed. Much like with Zach Braff and Ted Lasso (here) a few years ago, I was delighted to discover that I absolutely adore the show. So, it made me all the more excited to talk to Gordon, one of my favorite emerging talents. We hopped on Zoom recently for a lovely discussion, which you can check out in all of its glory today.

Below, you can see my conversation with Gordon. We touch on her filmmaking debut Theater Camp (reviewed here out of that year’s Sundance Film Festival), as well as my adoration for her work in Booksmart and Shiva Baby. Ironically, this chat happened on the same day as I spoke to her Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty co-star Adrien Brody (here). In this talk, I’m keen to know about how she picks a project, as well as what it takes. She brings a unique energy to The Bear and really represents a turning point in the show. Her character is unlike any other, really giving a specific flavor to Season Two. It’s clear she’s savoring it, not just because her career is still on the rise, but because she relishes working with someone like Jeremy Allen White (who I spoke to here about The Iron Claw, alongside Zac Efron). She’s lovely and about to become a huge star, so this is the perfect time to pick her brain. If you’re a fool like I was about haven’t watched The Bear yet, catch up on Hulu ASAP!

Here now is my interview with The Bear cast member Molly Gordon. Enjoy:

Season Two of The Bear is available to stream on Hulu!

Bruce Dern

I love Bruce Dern. Not only is he an iconic actor who I find mesmerizing to watch, he’s become one of my favorite people in the industry. Over the years, it’s been an absolute privilege to find out that the love is mutual between him and I. Anytime we find the time to get on the phone, inevitably it’s hours of baseball debates, stories, and life advice. Dern is a one of a kind actor, for sure, but he’s also a one of a kind gem of a man who I can’t believe I can consider not just a talent that I have a good working relationship with, but an honest to goodness friend as well. One of the very first interviews Awards Radar ever published was a two hour discussion between him and I (found here). Today (on his 88th birthday. no less), he returns for nearly the same length of time to talk about acting in Palm Royale opposite his daughter, Laura Dern, but also to just give us all another lesson in Hollywood history. Consider this almost more of a podcast episode than a traditional interview. However you slice it, gold is coming you way today from an all-timer.

Previously, I wrote the following, in part, about him here in a tribute:

Bruce Dern is a legend. Truly, he stands tall as a part of Hollywood, past, present, and even future. That’s due in no small part to his talent as an actor, but it’s a testament to his mind, as well as his kindness, that he’s remained someone people seek out, even after his 86th birthday. Many of you know that an interview that I did with him about a decade ago for Nebraska was the start of a periodic correspondence that we maintain to this day, but I wouldn’t be writing this today just because I like the guy. No, he’s the type of industry gem that we all should be valuing more, so anytime I have the opportunity to remind folks, especially younger cinephiles, of Dern’s power, I want to make sure that I do it. You don’t get to work with the likes of Alfred HitchockElia KazanAlexander PayneDouglas Trumbull, and more, without having the goods. For more than half a century, Dern has had the goods, in fact re-writing the acting game as he went along. Truly, no one does it like he does, even to this day, which makes his future roles still so exciting to consider.

Below, you can hear another epic conversation between Dern and I. As was the case last time, I’m smart enough to stand back and let him speak. Listening to his vivid recollection of the old days of Hollywood is an absolute delight. Here, we spoke for nearly an hour before I even recorded, getting most of our baseball discussions out of the way (he’s very concerned about my Mets, even as his Dodgers seem very well set up), but sports does make its way into the chat here and there. This time around, we go back and forth from Palm Royale, working with Laura, his early days in the business, recent Dernsies, and everything in between. Listening to this, you’ll get a sense of just how special the man is. Plus, today is his birthday, so make this his 88th birthday gift, paying tribute to the man, the myth, the legend…Bruce Dern.
