Oscar nominee Dwayne Johnson? It could happen, especially if The Smashing Machine turns out to be as good as it looks in the first trailer we got this morning. Coming from Benny Safdie, it stars Johnson as legendary UFC fighter Mark Kerr in a tale of ambition, success, and ultimately, tragedy. A24 will be releasing the movie on October 3rd, so count on a film festival run this fall.
The Smashing Machine still presents the very simple plot synopsis of: “The story of legendary mixed martial arts & UFC fighter Mark Kerr.” Safdie writes and directs, with Emily Blunt co-starring opposite Johnson. The cast also includes Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten, and Oleksandr Usyk, though Blunt and Johnson are the showcases. Both of them, alongside Safdie, should be heavily campaigned by A24 this season, assuming the full work matches this trailer. Take a look next.
