Before Emmy Gold 2024: Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series

We’re taking a look at this year’s Emmy nominees and digging into their past work and credits that may have influenced their Emmy-nominated work this year.

The Bear accomplished a rare feat last year by sweeping both Best Comedy Directing and Writing for two different episodes. The Bear, won Best Comedy Directing for “The Review” and Best Comedy Writing for “System.” The first series since Modern Family swept writing and directing for two separate episodes in 2011. Now the Hulu series will attempt to be the first series since Transparent to win back to back prizes in this category. But The Bear may get in its own way with both “Honeydew” and “Fishes” contending. Modern Family, was able to hold onto the Best Comedy Directing prize with three episodes in contention for its third season in 2013. Standing in their way is the past champion Hacks (2022) and a host of new contenders trying to make their mark.

**** We’ve limited the nominees “Emmy History” to only their history as directors.

At the delayed Emmys for 2023 everything went Storer’s way winning three Emmys for Best Comedy Series,  Best Comedy Directing and Best Comedy Writing for “System.” It has become almost commonplace in the Comedy races to see an individual win both for the same episode. But Storer, accomplished a rare feat for two different episodes. This year he will again contend for all three but for—“Fishes.” Christopher Storer won the DGA Award earlier in the year for “Fishes.” Which may or may not be a good sign. As he lost the DGA Award for the first season for the episode “The Review” but went on to win the Emmy. Storer will attempt to be the categories fist two-time winner since Joey Soloway won back-to-back trophies for Transparent (2015 and 2016).

This is Youssef’s second directing nomination and third overall landing a Best Comedy Actor nomination for Ramy (2020). Youssef has unquestionably had a great year earning his first ever DGA nomination for the above episode and appearing in the Oscar Best Picture nominee Poor Things. Being both a success in front and behind the camera might make him the envy of his fellow nominees.
