Welcome back to TV Topics, where your host Steven Prusakowski, joined by co-host Abe Friedtanzer, walks guests through their TV landscape. One special guest sits in for the entirety of each episode to discuss their relationship with television as well as dig deep into their latest work. For this episode we speak with a very, very talented man who has been entertaining and enlightening us for decades with the television shows he has created, produced, written and now dined on.

You will know our guest star from the 15 time Emmy-winning series he created, the much beloved Everybody Loves Raymond. While his incredible work on that series was from behind the camera, you also may have seen him step in front of the cameral on Curb Your Enthusiasm and other shows. Where his talents have really been able to shine in a whole new fashion, is on his very popular Netflix series Somebody Feed Phil. Of course I am talking about the one and only, a personal favorite of mine, Phil Rosenthal.

Phil sits down on the TV Topics couch as we ask questions about his TV viewing experience – from his favorite primetime show as a kid, to his can’t skip theme songs, to what show he would like to live in (you’ll never guess it) and much more. We then take a break from the TV Topics questions to deep dive into his outstanding and deceiving work on Somebody Feed Phil (which he discussed with Joey here last year).

That’s right, I said deceiving. The series is supposed to be a food and travel show, but that is a lie… it is MUCH more. Phil not only travels the globe meeting new people and old friends while trying some of the delicious food, he also is brings something much more important to our living rooms – empathy. That is why I need to take this moment to unmask Phil Rosenthal for what he really is – the deliverer of joy, entertainment, and empathy… through food. Helping make the world a better place one scrumptious meal at a time.

Courtesy of Netflix

As I expressed to Phil during our conversation (below), what always struck me as special about Somebody Feed Phil, besides its charismatic and very funny host, besides the it-looks-so-good-you-can-almost-taste-it delectable food, beside the beautiful cinematography which transports viewers to wonderful destinations across the globe (including my own Jersey City) – besides all of that… What struck me as special about the show is its heart. It truly is one of the most positive and uplifting shows that explores what connects us all and our ability to see one another not as foes or different, but as fellow travelers on the shared journey called life. All this while being a highly entertaining, funny, and fascinating show about food and travel.

It was a true pleasure so speak with Phil, a person’s whose work I have enjoy for decades. The conversation covers a lot of topics from The Honeymooners to his terrible poker face to how the loss of his dear parents affected the show and him personally. Listeners will enjoy every minute of it as much as we did.

Surprisingly, what I appreciate most about Phil is not his work, it is his motivation behind Somebody Feed Phil. Listen to our conversation below where his words speak for themself about the subject. I will share this one small piece of wisdom he passed along. On the topic of solving the world’s problem, Phil references the popular idea of building a wall. Rosenthal has another solution. “I always said instead of a wall how about a table?” Brilliant and beautiful. I hope to share a table with him one day to thank him face to face for his mission for good.

Thank you to Phil Rosenthal for sitting down on the TV Topics couch – it was an honor. Be sure to listen to episode 5 of TV Topics featuring Phil in its 32-minute entirety, directly below.

Also, for the heck of it, after watching six seasons of Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix, pick up Phil’s book about the series, here.

Future episodes of TV Topics will feature more of your favorite actors, actresses and artists, who will also discuss their relationship with TV. If you love television and good conversations, you’ll love TV Topics. Our upcoming guests will be announced soon, but just know they will be a lot of fun.

Subscribe to TV Topics on Spotify, Amazon Podcasts, Stitcher, Pandora, IHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Radio Public, Castbox, Google Podcasts. (Coming soon to Overcast, Pocket Cast, and more platforms.)

If you would like to be a guest on TV Topics, reach out to Steven Prusakowski.

It seems like being Phil Rosenthal is a pretty cool thing. A comedy writer, Rosenthal first really came to widespread notoriety as the creator, writer, and executive producer of the insanely popular sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. In recent years, he’s developed an on-screen personality, one seen brilliantly on the Netflix documentary series Somebody Feed Phil. Following Rosenthal as he eats, travels, and takes in a new part of the world, it’s as enjoyable as it is fascinating. A couple of weeks ago, I hopped on the phone with him to talk about the show, but since it’s me, the back and forth went off in a number of different directions. That’s just how these things go with me, usually to the interview’s benefit. With the fifth season of the program dropping in just a few days, I now present to you my very fun chat with Rosenthal.

Below, you can hear my conversation with Rosenthal. We talk mainly about Somebody Feed Phil, but there’s some Everybody Loves Raymond chatter, as well as even a bit on Rosenthal’s documentary Exporting Raymond. Beyond that, it’s just a discussion about comedy, food, travel, and living well. Rosenthal is a man who knows he’s won the game of life and is infinitely appreciative. You can see that not just in how his work seeks to comfort and entertain, but in how he carries himself, both on the show and during this chat. It was a delight spending some time on the phone with him. Season Five of Somebody Feed Phil debuts this week on Netflix and is a much watch, whether you’re a fan of Anthony Bourdain or Ray Romano. Rosenthal channels them both, through his own unique personality.

Here now is my interview with Somebody Feed Phil star Phil Rosenthal. Enjoy:

One of the chief joys of Sacramento, which is one of the more pleasing films of the year so far, is watching the chemistry of Michael Angarano and Michael Cera. They have a vibe that just feeds into each other, raising the charm and chemistry with each scene. As Angarano’s filmmaking debut, it’s also an impressive effort there. With the movie about to hit theaters, Angarano and Cera are here to to chat about it.

In my review of the film here, I said the following about Angarano and Cera’s work, alongside the rest of the cast:

Michael Angarano and Michael Cera have really enjoyable chemistry together, while Kristen Stewart elevates all of her scenes just on talent alone. Stewart isn’t asked to do a lot, but she has the charm and charisma to make Rosie instantly lovable, especially with her droll way of interacting with Cera’s Glenn. Watching Angarano be a bit of a scamp, a man-child who you want to root for, as well as Cera play a more mature, yet just as neurotic type of character he became famous for, is a lot of fun. They don’t ignore the weight of certain situations, but they always find the dry comedy. Maya Erskine is very solid too, though she has the least screen time of the quartet. Supporting players here includes A.J. Mendez, though Angarano and Cera are clearly the focus.

Making his filmmaking debut, co-writer/director Michael Angarano impresses. The screenplay he penned with Chris Smith never tries to make things too cute, while his direction is supremely confident. It’s a road trip comedy, so there are beats that need to be hit, but it always feels like this flick is up to something a little bit different. There’s a genuine curiosity about what will happen next that fuels the narrative. Well paced, with a lean running time, it all builds to a very touching conclusion, sending you out on a high. The film just works, plain and simple.

Below, you can hear Angarano and Cera chatting about the movie. Apologies, you can only hear their side of the conversation, but they’re talking mostly to each other, so it works. They discuss road trips, the experience of making the film, and more. They’re really enjoyable to listen to, so this should still be fun. Plus, the flick is great, which is what counts. Go see Sacramento this weekend and you’ll understand why!

Edward Norton is one of the best actors of his generation. Whatever you see him in, he’s totally committed. There’s an intensity to his work that a film can feed off of. So, in A Complete Unknown, seeing Norton play a gentle soul in Pete Seeger is really an accomplishment. I first knew Seeger’s work through Bruce Springsteen, and Norton is a Springsteen fan as well, so that factored into our conversation. The movie is about to hit theaters, so today, I want to share my conversation with Norton, who’s aces in the flick.

In my review of the film (here), I had the following to say about the cast, including Norton:

Timothée Chalamet leads an impeccable cast while doing the best work of his career so far. He becomes Bob Dylan in a way that’s never impression, but simply masterful interpretation. There isn’t a moment where you see Chalamet or compare him to Dylan. He just is Dylan here. Monica Barbaro and Elle Fanning are the film’s secret weapons, bringing out other sides of Dylan. Barbaro gets to go toe to toe with Chalamet and challenge his character as Joan Baez, both artistically and personally. Fanning is able to break your heart while looking at the man differently than anyone else. They both impressed me massively. Edward Norton crafts a gentle soul who sees this genius as a sign of his demise in a way, appreciating him nonetheless. It’s a kind yet complex turn that also ranks among his best, which is really saying something. Boyd Holbook gets to have the most fun of the lot, especially when Johnny Cash is on the wilder side, but never turns it into a caricature. You’re seeing Cash at one moment in his life, genuinely impressed by Dylan. Scoot McNairy makes the most of his few scenes, essentially silent yet also giving us a different look at Dylan.

Below, you can see my discussion with Norton. In addition to a little Springsteen talk, I wanted to hear about how he found Seeger, which leads us in a few directions. He even mentions Fight Club at one point, which is always fun to hear about. His work in A Complete Unknown is really quite something, up there with anything he’s ever done, though in a completely different key. Plus, he liked my Springsteen on Broadway shirt, which I got a kick out of as well. Once you see the film in a few days, you’ll understand why he seems locked in for a Best Supporting Actor nomination…

Succumb to the darkness. That’s been the Focus Features marketing slogan for Nosferatu. It’s an apt one, too, as this Robert Eggers passion project does not shy away from the darkness of the Dracula type story, nor does it avoid the seduction. There’s plenty of gross moments in the film, but it also has an element of longing that really plays. Eggers brings his unique precision and craftsmanship to the vampire tale, making it the sort of feel-bad holiday offering that cinephiles should go nuts over.

Nosferatu is Eggers with no filter. It proves that he’s a good match for the material, befitting his longstanding interest in making this movie, but it also means that this is not quite a mainstream horror flick. Gross and weird, while also being classically haunting is perfect for the arthouse, especially given Eggers’ instincts. The multiplex? Well, that can be a harder sell. At the same time, anyone who gets bored with this one either is unfamiliar with his previous outings, has no patience for a story breathing, or just doesn’t get what he’s putting down. Being on the Eggers wavelength is key here.

Focus Features

This remake of the film of the same name, while also being an adaptation itself of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, is the story of Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp) and the vampire obsessed with her. Put under the spell of Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) years ago and promised to him, she’s now married to Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult), who is unaware of her past. Sent by his boss to go close a real estate deal with a demanding Count in Transylvania, Thomas encounters Orlok, who initially doesn’t know who he’s married to. When he finds out, the need to be reunited with her, as well as feed, is intense. Stuck in Orlok’s castle, Thomas eventually escapes and returns home, though it soon becomes clear that Orlok has followed.

While death and disease have come alongside Orlok, Ellen has been having visions and losing control of herself. While Thomas tries to help her, others like Anna Harding (Emma Corrin) and Friedrich Harding (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) think she’s just losing her mind. Their lack of belief in her will have consequences. On the other hand, men like Professor Albin Eberhart von Franz (Willem Dafoe) and Dr. Wilhelm Sievers (Ralph Ineson) begin to understand the stakes and team up with Thomas to attempt to vanquish Orlok. Can they do it in time, or is Ellen lost forever? More than that, will she succumb to the darkness at hand?

Focus Features

Watching the cast buy into this vision is really something. Lily-Rose Depp is asked to do some very intense physical acting, while Bill Skarsgård continues to prove he’s one of the best at acting behind large amounts of makeup. He’s unrecognizable as the vampire, which is quite a feat. They both sink into these roles with abandon, which not only is what’s required, but how the story becomes as affecting as it does. The fact that the final scenes are actually moving? That’s all Depp and Skarsgård making you care. Nicholas Hoult showcases terror and love in equal measure, giving depth to a potentially thin role. Willem Dafoe is having fun, getting to go bigger than most. Emma Corrin is solid if unremarkable, while Aaron Taylor-Johnson hams it up a bit. Supporting players here, in addition to Ralph Ineson, include Simon McBurney, among others, but Nosferatu is the Depp and Skarsgård show for sure.

Filmmaker Robert Eggers puts it all on the screen here, and while it’s narratively perhaps his most straightforward work, no one will mistake this for a garden variety horror film. The stark cinematography from Jarin Blaschke, the ominous score from Robin Carolan, it all combines with terrific period production design to make it darkly hypnotic. The pacing is slow, so Eggers’ script isn’t always giving you quite as much to ponder as his direction, but there’s never a moment where you don’t think you’re in the hands of a storyteller executing his vision. Regardless of whether Nosferatu succeeds for you or not, it’s impossible to deny the craftsmanship on display. Between that and the acting, it’s easy to appreciate what’s on display.

Nosferatu works because Robert Eggers has a precision that comes through no matter what he’s doing. Whether you prefer this to The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman (for me, The Witch is still tops, with this probably next in line), it’s clear that we have a unique aueteur operating at a high level. Whether you can do a horror movie or not, this vision is well worth your time.

SCORE: ★★★

Director J.A. Bayona is no stranger to the land of fantasy and the supernatural, having previously helmed films like A Monster Calls and The Orphanage. Having directed a massive blockbuster like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom also helped him tackle the first two episodes of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which will be historically known as the most expensive television series of all time. While speaking to Awards Radar on a virtual press day, Bayona described constructing a show with such a massive scale and elaborate action sequences inside a TV schedule as extremely challenging. His previous franchise filmmaking experience was incredibly helpful, even if The Rings of Power is shown on a different medium than Jurassic World. (Full video interview, below.)

“It was very challenging [to figure out] how we could feed those massive set pieces that take so much time to prepare and shoot and then go on the post-production schedule of a TV show. However, I’m glad that Amazon had the ambition to create something that was not television in the traditional sense. Television has changed significantly over the past ten years, and it takes time to prepare, shoot, and do the post-production process. All my previous experience was very helpful in doing something like this.”

Bayona has been a long-time fan of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s world since he read The Lord of the Rings as a kid and explains that “when you read the books, you can tell how massive it is. At the same time, you can tell how rich and detailed the world of Tolkien is. For this show, the secret is to focus on the small details and then use the landscape to increase the psychology and how you can tell the story of these characters. We use visual language to tell every single detail of the story through the landscape, colors, and textures. However, the characters that Tolkien created from the books were a very good guide for this show.”

In crafting the show’s visual language, Bayona collaborated once again with his long-time friend Óscar Faura. He was the perfect fit to craft the show’s visual look because Bayona knew “how much he loves beauty. Every frame he does is so beautiful. I knew he was perfect for this world because beauty is crucial in Tolkien’s world. He always talks about big ideas: the good and the bad, darkness and light, the ugly and beauty. It’s very much like reading fairy tales. Oscar is perfect at creating these atmospheres for beauty, and the darkness we created in movies like The Orphanage and A Monster Calls.”

In the video interview below, you’ll find all of these topics and more, including setting the tone and atmosphere for the show by directing the first two episodes, the challenges of distancing yourself from what came before, and his favorite scenes to shoot. Welcome back to the Awards Radar Podcast. In each episode, Editor Joey Magidson (that’s me!) will be joined by some of the staff of Awards Radar to talk about the latest in film, television, and entertainment in general. The show will obviously have an awards season slant to it, but we won’t forget about other movies and shows, that’s for sure!

For episode number ninety six, I’m joined, as always, by Myles Hughes. This time around, Myles and I talk about a ton, mostly coming from a number of listener questions. Between that, Myles gives his take on Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (my review of which is here), while I start the conversation on Nope (you can see my review here), which will feed into next week’s spoilers-included episode…

As always my friends and faithful listeners/readers, I do hope you all enjoy the latest episode of the Awards Radar Podcast, our ninety-sixth one to date (only a couple more to 100!). Of course, feel free to revisit the previous installments by clicking the Podcast tab (here) on the top of the page. Plus, listen to us on Apple Podcasts (iTunes), Spotify, and other platforms. More to come each and every single week, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening!

The Critics Choice Association has revealed the nominees for the sixth annual Critics Choice Real TV Awards, which, according to a press release, celebrates the best in nonfiction, unscripted, and reality programming across broadcast, cable, and streaming platforms. The ceremony will occur in person at the Fairmont Century Plaza on June 15.

In a statement, CCA TV Branch Vice-President Ed Martin said, “The historic strikes by the WGA and SAG/AFTRA necessitated a record amount of unscripted programming in all areas of television, from broadcast to cable to streaming, making the last 12 months a remarkable time for reality TV. The depth and diversity of our nominees for the sixth annual Real TV Awards reflects the importance and ever-increasing scope of the genre, which continues to offer something for everyone.”

CCA members will choose winners and receive ballots via email on May 20 to cast their vote. Fan voting for Male and Female Star of the Year, Best Ensemble Cast, and Best Show Host will also begin on May 20 at criticschoice.com.
