Steven Spielberg and Taika Waititi Teaming Up to Adapt ‘James’

Hollywood wants to be in the Percival Everett business. Last year, the adaptation of his novel Erasure became the Oscar-winning film American Fiction. Now, with Everett’s latest book James having its feature rights acquired by Universal, some very big names are circling it.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Steven Spielberg is on board to executive produce and Taika Waititi is being courted to direct the movie. James is a retelling of Huck Finn, so this is potentially a very interesting pairing.

The synopsis for James is as follows: “when the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. Thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.”
