Tim Blake Nelson is one of our best character actors. I previously spoke to the man here about his riveting turn in Old Henry, and now at the 2024 Tribeca Festival, he has Bang Bang, another terrific showcase. Not only is he a master at his craft, he’s a fascinating man to talk to. Besides the aforementioned interview, I’ve moderated some Q&A events with him, and even shared a meal, so I can attest to Nelson also just being a top notch person. Today, I’m pleased to present our latest discussion!
In my Tribeca review of the film (here), I had the following to say about Nelson’s performance:
Tim Blake Nelson really shines in this picture. This is one of his finest performances, both amusing and engaging, with moments of heartbreak thrown in. He’s invested in every element of Bang, which makes this an incredibly familiar yet unique character. The distinctive quirks mix with some real seediness to make him an American Original, which Nelson is more than game to breathe life into.
Below, you can hear my chat with Nelson. We focus a lot on the boxing element of not just the film, but his character as well. The movie tackles the emotional damage of a fighter, which he’s able to capture quite well. Listening to him talk about his preparation is utterly fascinating. When you’re able to see Bang Bang, you’ll be bound to be taken by his work. For now, listen to him talk about it and you’ll be eager to see it, that’s for sure…
